Blog

Almost there!

Looks like everything is going ahead and there will be new owners at Skyelight Candles by the beginning to mid July this year. When everything is signed and sealed I will send out another blog with the information but in the meantime I just wanted to thank all the people who have stuck by us throughout the years and I hope that you will continue to give Skyelight Candles your custom for many years to come.

The new owners will probably be taking a fresh new look at stock and I do know that other gift items will be appearing. I also know that the website is in for a HUGE overhaul (about time) and I am just as excited as anyone else to see what happens.

When I have more news I will let you know

Undecided Time

It's that time of the year again. Easter is late this year and usually I don't open until the week before Easter but perhaps this year I might open a bit earlier. However, here's the quandary:

The house is up for sale but this time the business is being sold separately. I have had a couple of people interested in the house. Two are interested in continuing the business while one of them isn't. No definite offers have come through as yet but my mind is working overtime. What if the highest offer is the one who doesn't want the business? There were a couple of people interested in buying the business without the house but they have recently had a change of heart - so will Skyelight Candles be put to rest? Will 16 years of building the business from its roots in the cold dingy garage with a camping stove to a purpose built shop and workshop all have been in vain? The other side to this is, should I purchase more wax? Will I still be in this position in a year's time? Should I just close and sell everything on eBay? To put all this into perspective - I am the type of person when in a restaurant and faced with an extensive menu will chop and change his mind up to 6 times before I end up ordering something I didn't really want in the first place! Decisions are not my friend.

Ideally I would love the house buyer to purchase the company and continue it from its current location but I have to be sensible and think outside that particular box. So why am I sharing this angst with you? I suppose it is to let you know that the business itself may come up for sale and I do know there may be a slight chance that someone out there reading this blog might be looking for a life style change and may just wish to take over an established business. So, if you are that person or know of someone who might have that though, then let me know. Obviously I don't know for definite yet what is happening but it is always worth the discussion.

Anyway, with the thought that I might still be here in the next couple of months, I best get out there and start making up some stock!

Have a good Easter and hope the weather improves for us all

Wet and miserable

Yes, another typical day on Skye - wet, windy and miserable. Seeing the bedraggled look on customers as they come in to the shop is quite sad but, as I always say: You don't come to Skye for the weather!!

Some news - I am putting the house up for sale again very soon and looking to move to pastures new. Although, at my age, this will definitely be the last move before ending up in some Old Folk's Home. That means that I will be closing down Skyelight Candles - that's the sad news. The good news is: I have got a couple of people on the island who are keen to take it over. Which means Skyelight will continue.

It still bugs me that the other candle company on this island isn't big enough to admit they aren't the only candle making place on Skye. I'm fed up hearing customers come in and tell me stories of what they were told when they enquired about another candle shop on the island at their Broadford headquarters. They are NOT the only candle company on Skye. We are NOT closed. We are NOT a 'novelty candle shop'. OK we haven't got shops on the mainland. We're not trying to become 'world famous' - we are simply a company who has been making candles on Skye for 16 years and have been keeping a roof over our head ever since. Don't get me wrong, I think that making a success of your company is a wonderful thing but NOT at the expense of others. Anyway, I won't have to bother about them any longer after I move, so  wish them all the best!

Just to be clear: I am still open and will be until I either move from the island or the business is bought over. I will keep everyone up to date and I hope that, when the day comes and the business is in new hands, all my regular customers will continue to support them.

Best get the wellies on and get back out to the shop

So excited - mugs!!

I am SO excited!! I know I should get out more but I have cracked the art of printing mugs and now I can't stop, I'm like a thing demented! The selection of 8 designs are listed now on the site under 'mugs' (where else??) and I am in the middle of putting a new page up for personalised mugs. These mugs can be ordered as singles or in multiples. All you need to do is send me the design you want and it will be carried out by the crazed mug printer of Staffin. I've always wanted to do printed mugs and have tried a couple of different methods - a few of which would have been OK if they were just for my own personal use but not for retailing but at last I have been let in to the Mug Printer Circle - a bit like the Magic Circle - and have been given the formula!! I hope you like them and, remember, if you want something special for someone special then I can do it for you - no matter what the design.

Anyway, best get back to my mug press before I wear it out!!Here's one of the mugs!

Grand Opening

Well ... not so much 'grand' as just open for the season! :)

Yes, that's the shop open now til the end of October this year. Am up to my armpits in wax making stock so forgot to post this last week - however, I had quite a few customers wander in - a couple of whom were delightful and chatty and actually bought something haha. That's the trouble when it rains up here - people waiting for the bus at the bottom of the drive just pop in to keep dry. I don't mind at all, at least they are dry and I have someone to chat with.

Anyway, as I say, am open now but there are a couple of occasions when I am having to shut the shop due to hospital; appointments etc. The ones I know about are already on the Opening Hours section of the website but please do check that before making your way up to Staffin. I hate letting people down.

Best get back out to the workshop and pour more wax! Hope to see many of you during the year
