Skyelight Candles is situated in Staffin, which is at the north end of the Isle of Skye on the Trotternish Ridge. From our workshop we have a spectacular view of the famous Quiraing and, within minutes, we can walk over the crofting grounds and be overlooking Staffin Bay.
This is the main reason our signature candles came into existance, as it was these views that gave us the inspiration for the Quiraing and Staffin Bay candles that you will see on our shopping pages. We then included the Red Cuillin and, as they say in all good movies, we never looked back!
Skyelight Candles came into being in December 2001 when we had moved to Skye but had very little money left after the purchase of the house and all the work that had to be done on it. It left us with a bit of a quandry: what to do about Christmas presents for our friends. Kevin came up with the idea of making them something personal - but, what? We thought about pottery, painting, jewellery - all too expensive to buy the necessary items to get started. Then we came upon the idea of making them candles. All we needed was some wax, a mould and some wick. So, that's what we did. We made each candle a different colour and design and found that we actually enjoyed doing it, but had no intentions of making any more after that Christmas. That was where it all started. The friends, to whom we had given the candles, had other friends who wanted to know where they had got the candles from and whether they could buy any. So, we set a corner of the garage up as a workshop and made more candles in the freezing cold winter of that year. And it was cold, being in a corrugated garage with no heating - but we were enjoying ourselves and making a little bit of money too!
That is how it all started and, since then, Skyelight Candles has gone from strength to strength. From those humble beginnings in a cold, damp garage to a purpose built workshop. People are still amazed when they come to the shop and see that all the candles are made in such small premises. In fact, many people park in the car park belonging to the church next door, assuming that large building (the church) must be Skyelight Candles! However, we are a small business run between two people and between us we make all the candles by hand and are always experimenting with new ideas and designs. Every candle is unique in that no two are identical.
Our guarantee to all our customers is: If you have a problem with any of our candles then you should send it back to us and we will replace it. We are happy to say that, over the years, we have had only three candles returned out of the thousands we have sold. We use only the best in materials and have even had a special heather scent developed for us, since no such scent existed before we started making candles. Our candles are not heavily scented like some brands, as we believe a more subtle scent is much more effective in a room.
