Candles are wonderful things - many people love candles all over the house and burn them regularly. Others like to burn them on special occasions while there are a few people who can't bring themselves to burn them. Whilst we like all three types of people, the first two are obviously our favourites, as they'll come back and buy new ones! However, no matter how regularly (or irregularly) you burn your candles, you must always take care whilst doing so. At Skyelight Candles we know the value of safety first and therefore we would ask you to take a couple of minutes to read our top tips for burning candles safely and also how to get the best out of your candles.

 GENERAL:

• Always check any labels and warnings that come with the candle or candle holder

• Use a suitable non-flammable holder

• Ensure the candle is standing upright in the holder before lighting

• Always place candle or candle holders on a surface that will not get damaged by heat

• Do not move candles whilst still lit or when wax is still liquid

• Never leave a burning candle unattended

• Remove all packaging before use and trim wick to approx 1/2inch (1cm)

• Burn out of reach of children and pets

• Extinguish candles with a candle snuffer. Do not blow them out. If you do have to blow them out, make sure your hand is cupped round the back of the flame to stop any sparks flying on to your table/carpet/etc

• Never use water to extinguish a candle

• Allow headroom above the candle for heat to disperse

• Ensure candles are burned away from flammable items

• Candles should be burned away from other sources of heat, such as televisions and direct sunlight

• Candles should always be burned in an area free from draughts

• Always make sure the wick is trimmed to 1/2inch (1cm) before lighting or relighting

• If the candle starts to smoke, extinguish it and trim the wick as above

LASTLY - Remember, if you place a candle in the window and the sun shines in, you are likely to end up with either a melted candle or a faded one!

  PILLAR CANDLES:

  TEALIGHTS:

• Tealights are ideal for lanterns or holders which have holes in them, as the tealight case will hold the wax as it melts

• Place tealight holders on a surface that will not be damaged by heat

• Do not burn on a television or any other warm place

• Any recepticle which has a tealight burning in it will become extremely hot and must be left to cool before trying to move or pick up

GLASS - TIN or CERAMIC FILLED ITEMS

• Place on a surface that will not be damaged by heat

• Do not use if the container is cracked, chipped or scratched

• Never let the flame come into contact with the container

• Do not move candle when lit

• Discontinue use when 1/4inch (1/2cm) of wax remains
